Generally a combination of at least three drugs is prescribed to suppress the virus from replicating and boost the immune system. The treatments that are recommended are Reverse transcriptase inhibitors, Nucleoside or nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors and non nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors.

Pregnant women who are diagnosed as HIV-positive should seek medical help immediately because HAART therapy reduces the risk of transmitting the virus to the fetus.
